Europe is actively promoting a green transition through its EU Green Deal and is making promising strides on systems change. Changing the way Europe, and the rest of the world produces and consumes both food and energy and designs its cities also requires shifting the supporting economics, finance and governance systems. These “enabling systems” can incentivize the right behaviors and practices, such as also proposed in the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), EU Taxonomy and other Fit for 55 measures.
Also, decisive action in the European context will have repercussions around the world. We want to make sure that systems transitions are ambitious, whilst ensuring that countries we often rely on for resources and materials will have capacity support in adapting to such change, otherwise our transition will not be long-term nor sustainable.
