Each new research report confirms the urgency of our sustainable development goals. Not only in terms of climate, environment and living environment, but also in terms of health, education, safety, (social) equality and social cohesion. Fortunately, there is a lot of willingness to get started with this, but we need to increase ambition and immediate action. The world needs to address systemic problems and simultaneously pursue goals that improve human wellbeing, protect nature and tackle climate change. The transition will not be possible if it doesn’t fundamentally benefit people, nor can we curb climate change without safeguarding ecosystems.

Europe is actively promoting a green transition through its EU Green Deal and is making promising strides on systems change. Changing the way Europe, and the rest of the world produces and consumes both food and energy and designs its cities also requires shifting the supporting economics, finance and governance systems. These “enabling systems” can incentivize the right behaviors and practices.

Also, decisive action in the European context will  have repercussions around the world. We want to make sure that systems transitions are ambitious, whilst ensuring that countries we often rely on for resources and materials will have capacity support in adapting to such change, otherwise our transition will not be long-term nor sustainable.

We know what we have to do. We have the technology, knowledge and resources to create a sustainable society. And we even have a good sense of all the levers and pathways to put change into motion.

The imperative is growing for businesses in all sectors, facing significant strategic risks associated with climate change and biodiversity collapse, to build out new capabilities and business models that contribute to accelerated decarbonisation, climate resilience, just transition and environmental regeneration. Climate related strategic risk includes opportunity cost in a context of major market transformations, stimulated by leading European Union initiatives designed to achieve decarbonisation of Europe’s economy and industry at least 6x faster than anything that has been achieved so far.  Proactive climate and sustainability action presents strategic opportunities for all businesses. However, innovation approaches need to be fit for purpose to achieve that. This presentation will explore what that means and what it requires.

The new laws and regulations, such as the CSRD, are contributing to increased transparency around companies’ impact on people and the environment. It allows investors to have a better understanding of how companies are performing in terms of sustainability, which means they can make better choices to invest in companies that build on a sustainable future. But what do they base these choices on? You will hear from three different private equity firms (Carbon Equity, KKR, NPM Capital) in this panel discussion. They will explain their way of thinking and share what topics should be high on companies’ agendas to be appealing for investments.

U herkent het wel: ruimte is schaarser, grondstoffen zijn schaarser, schone lucht is schaarser en personeel is schaarser. We kunnen deze nieuwe vormen van schaarste echter niet oplossen zoals we de oude schaarste oplosten. Paul legt op een heldere manier uit welke nieuwe manier van denken en doen er nodig zijn en welke politieke keuzes deze nieuwe manier van denken vergt voor de lange termijn. Hij laat bovendien zien dat het niet allemaal kommer en kwel is, want het is mogelijk: een gelukkiger en net zo welvarend Nederland dat binnen de draagkracht van de aarde leeft.
